Back To School and A Hands Free Reminder - Play It Safe or Pay

I figured today instead of hyping one of my daily photos I'd devote the post to an important topic - hands-free driving. There's no disputing that distracted driving is a, if not THE, leading cause of accidents (checking some stats on this now). It never ceases to amaze me at how many people continue to talk on their cell phones and even worse, continue to text/browse and drive... it really is insane! Talking on a cell phone while driving is bad enough, however, trying to text while driving is simply downright STUPID and dangerous yet so many people are still doing it... simply look around, it really blows my mind.

With school starting back up next week this is now a much bigger deal, particularly as all of our kids will be on the streets walking to school, biking to College, walking to the bus stop etc... basically the road and pedestrian traffic is going to soar once school is back in. Every year at this time I'm always reminded of an incident in Fort Collins, Colorado a couple of years ago where I used to live. A young girl, Erica Forney, was killed near a school while riding here bike, the result of a driver on a cell phone who's vehicle drifted into the bike lane... the result was tragic! This event resulted in prompt action being taken and new cell phone/driving laws being put into place.

Let's not go through this in Victoria and please take a moment to remember this and think about it if you find yourself reaching for the phone while in your vehicle. Some stats from the B.C. Government... "According to independent research and studies, cellphone use while driving is the number-one cause of distracted driving. On average, about 117 people die each year in B.C. and 1,400 are sent to hospital because someone was not paying attention behind the wheel." See details of the laws in B.C HERE
